PhD Award 2021 for Dr.-Ing. Idoia Cortes Garcia

2021/12/07

The PhD Award of the Graduate School of Computational Engineering of TU Darmstadt for the best doctoral thesis completed in the previous year goes this year to Dr.-Ing. Idoia Cortes Garcia for her dissertation “Mathematical analysis and simulation of field models in accelerator circuits”. The work was supervised by Prof. Dr. Sebastian Schöps, head of the Computational Electromagnetics (CEM) chair at the department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at TU Darmstadt. The prize money of 1,000 euros is provided by Dassault Systèmes, a leading international science company and software developer. Its 3DEXPERIENCE platform enables customers in eleven industries to create sustainable innovations with the help of virtual twins.

Cortes Garcia has been working since 2015 on the modelling, analysis and development of numerical methods for time-domain analysis in circuits of superconducting particle accelerator magnets, where the results are not limited to applications in the accelerator context, but can also be used, for example, in the medical field for devices used in radiation therapy. During her research, she cooperated closely with the technical departments of CERN. This involved the joint development of a software package based on her work, which is now being used productively to check and improve the safety of the quench protection system of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.

Cortes Garcia has recently received an appointment to a tenure-track assistant professorship in the design of multiphysics dynamical systems at TU Eindhoven.
